Macau hotel occupancy rate declines in the first four months of 2020

Affected by COVID-19, Macau’s tourism industry was severely hit. In the first four months of this year, the average room occupancy rate of hotels and apartments in Macau was 34.8%, a year-on-year decrease of 57%; guests decreased by 65.9% to 1.581 million. In addition, in the first four months, Macao’s inbound tourists decreased by 76.6% year-on-year to 3.302 million.

In the first four months, the average room occupancy rate of hotels and apartments was 34.8%, a year-on-year decrease of 57.0 percentage points; the number of guests also decreased by 65.9% to 1.581 million, and the average length of stay was extended by 0.2 nights to 1.7 nights. In the first four months, a total of 253,000 passengers joined the group, a year-on-year decrease of 92.3%. Residents using travel agency services to go out also decreased by 85.4% to 88,000. In addition, in the first four months, Macao’s inbound tourists decreased by 76.6% year-on-year to 3.302 million.

On May 28, according to the statistics and census bureau of the Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region, as the entry and quarantine measures of Macao further tightened in late March, the number of hotel and apartment guests (excluding medical observation purposes) in Macau totaled 10.7 in April Ten thousand passengers, a year-on-year decrease of 90.6%; the average room occupancy rate fell by 78.6% to 12.9%.

According to statistics from the Statistics and Census Service, a total of 110 hotels and apartments were opened in April, and the number of available rooms decreased by 12.3% from the same month last year to 34,000. With the tightening of entry and quarantine measures in late March, the number of overnight visitors entering the country continued to decrease in April, and the average room occupancy rate (excluding medical observation purposes, the same below) fell by 78.6 percentage points to 12.9%. The average room occupancy rate of five-star hotels (6.6%) decreased by 85.9 percentage points, while the average room occupancy rate of two-star hotels (37.4%) and apartments (36.3%) decreased by 40.1 percentage points and 28.5 percentage points respectively.

In April, there were 107,000 hotel and apartment guests, a year-on-year decrease of 90.6%. Residents from different countries/regions all recorded declines, of which Mainland China (70 thousand passengers) and Hong Kong (10 thousand passengers) decreased by 91.1% and 92.8% respectively. The average length of stay of residents increased by 0.9 nights to 2.3 nights.

Restricted by immigration and quarantine measures, no passengers joined the tour in Australia in April; residents used travel agency services to go out 200 times, a year-on-year decrease of 99.9%.
